monkaS
Twitch Emote - Meaning & Origin
What does monkaS mean?
The monkaS emote depicts a nervous, sweating Pepe the Frog with wide, anxious eyes. It's one of the most recognizable emotes in Twitch culture, used to express anxiety, fear, stress, or nervousness during tense moments in streams. The emote perfectly captures the feeling of dread or anticipation when something potentially bad or stressful is about to happen.
Origin
MonkaS originated from a Pepe the Frog illustration that first appeared on 4chan's /lit/ (literature) board on July 16, 2011. The emote as we know it today was uploaded to BetterTTV (BTTV) by a Twitch user named Monkasen (formerly known as MonkaSenpai) on March 16, 2016. The name 'monkaS' is derived from the uploader's username, with the 'S' standing for 'Scared'.
The emote gained significant popularity in early 2017 after being featured on Forsen's community page, one of the most influential gaming communities on Twitch at that time. From there, it quickly spread throughout the broader Twitch ecosystem and became a staple emote across the platform.
When to use monkaS
MonkaS is commonly used in Twitch chat during:
- High-tension moments in competitive games (clutch situations, close matches)
- When a streamer is in a dangerous or difficult position in a game
- During suspenseful moments in horror games or scary content
- When viewers anticipate something bad or awkward happening to the streamer
- Uncomfortable or awkward social interactions on stream
- When a streamer is about to make a risky decision
The emote has spawned several variations including monkaOMEGA, monkaThink, and monkaW, each expressing different intensities of anxiety or stress.
